Varanasi can hardly be qualified as modern, progressive, open-mind city or even fulfilling and safe for an indian woman. Patriarchal, set in time, traditional to be stifling or even community, there would be the terms close to the reality, and if the tourists find some charm for a few days there, the Indian women have to adapt everyday life. It is very difficult for the women and the young girls to be free of their movements and to circulate at their convenience, because of the family, of the look of the community and the weight of the traditions. Also, without particular qualifications, it is extremely difficult to find a correct job, i.e decent, correctly paid and safe.
Most of them did not finish their schooling, and they have a lot of household chores which interfere with the possibility of a work with fixed hours. If this situation is common, it's not absolute. Some girls have the opportunity to study in Varanasi or somewhere else in India and to get a job even once they are married. It is important to understand all the nuances and the complexities of India. We targeted first and foremost the girls and the young women of homes with low incomes and/or without working prospect, in family troubles meaning in financial difficulty.
